The Dog and Gun

The Dog & Gun, a popular Keswick watering hole and now a part of the Greene King family, has retained its status as a community hub. It’s a Greene King, so naturally there’s a wide selection of drinks and food, but the pub has made a name for itself thanks to its goulash.

Plus, they welcome dogs with open arms, so you can typically see at least one or two lazing around the bar area.

The Riding Post Hotel

The Pack Horse is a historic pub that serves as a safe haven for locals wishing to spend an evening out with friends over drinks and food. The upper levels are designated as dining areas and are dog-free.

However, you and Fido are invited to take up residence in the lower level of this dog-friendly pub in Keswick in order to become toasty and refreshed.

Bird of Prey:

Just outside of Keswick is a pub called the Pheasant, which allows dogs inside and out so long as they are kept in the bar areas with their owners. In exchange for a gift to the Keswick Mountain Rescue, your dog will have access to water dishes and tasty snacks.

The pub dog could end up being your new best friend. CAMRA approved and warm, the bar is decorated with antiques and artwork by local artist John Wilkinson.

Wainwright Inn & Tavern

If you’re looking for a great selection of Cumbrian ales and a lively environment, look no further than The Wainwright, a regular in the CAMRA good beer guide and a finalist for The Great Outdoors Pub of the Year.

Keswick’s The Fox and Hounds is a family- and dog-friendly watering hole that also happens to be one of the top walking pubs in the United Kingdom. After a day of hiking the rocky mountains and untamed Lake District terrain, this is the ideal place to rest and refuel.

Hotel “Twa Dogs”

I wouldn’t have expected otherwise from a tavern and hotel called the Twa Dogs Inn. Fortunately, they are open to guests with pets. Its location between Latrigg and Skiddaw makes it an ideal rest station for hikers on either end of the Coast2Coast path.

You and Fido can enjoy the scenery of the fells from the garden, but feel free to come inside if it gets too chilly. (Beware the Bogart, please!)

Bank’s Inn Inn

The Bank Tavern serves classic British fare and local beers, and is a favourite among both locals and tourists. The bar welcomes dogs.

Staff members go out of their way to make pets feel welcome, so your furry friend may enjoy their stay just as much as you do. This lovely, old-school pub has low ceilings, so be careful not to hit your head.

The Hotel George

Visitors can still find a comfortable bed and a full meal at Keswick’s oldest coaching inn, the George Hotel. You and your four-legged friend are welcome to relax with a drink (or two) in the bar’s cosy atmosphere in front of the fireplace.

The menu reflects the welcoming atmosphere with pub standards and traditional British fare like their world-famous cow pie.

Hotel Kings Arms

The Kings Arms is a dog-friendly hotel and pub. Fido is allowed at the hotel’s bar and lounge. Doggy beds are provided if you decide to remain, saving you space in the trunk.

There is hearty food that makes the most of some excellent local ingredients, and generous helpings of Lakeland warmth. There is also an abundance of whiskies and good ales for you to drink it all down with.

Inn at Swinside

The Swinside Inn is located on the western shore of Derwentwater, only a short distance from Keswick. Since it is visible from Catbells, this tavern draws many mountain-bound hikers. You can see the beautiful fell, making this beer garden a strong contender for greatest view.

After a long day of walking, dogs and their owners will both appreciate the complimentary water and biscuits provided by this bar and bed and breakfast. It’s possible that Milo, the pub dog, will be there.

Hotel del Castillo Blanco

There are four rooms with bunk beds and a shared kitchen at this basic bunkhouse, plus a charming bar. The White Horse is a welcoming haven for weary hikers and mountaineers who have just descended from Blencathra.

It’s also a stop along the Coast-to-Coast bike path. Both humans and their canine companions will feel quite at home at this quaint country bar.

A Hotel on Lake Road

The Lake Road Inn is another attractive establishment under the ownership of Robinson’s Brewery, serving traditional British pub fare and comfort foods. The random nautical element in the otherwise seafaringly rustic furnishings is a nice touch.

The regular events and live music at this rural bar make it a popular meeting place for locals and visitors alike, including dog owners who want to socialise with their four-legged friends.

Insignia of the Royal Household

Given the high number of canine patrons, the Royal Oak has been called “too dog friendly” by at least one critic. If you really want to indulge your fur baby, they even have a dog menu that won’t break the bank. (It’s no surprise that it’s a hit.)

There are beautiful, dog-friendly rooms on the second floor, which share the same bright, pleasant atmosphere as the bar below.

Magnolia with a Twist

This is not your typical English pub. The Magnolia is the brewery’s taproom, so while Belgian beers are a speciality there, that’s not the main focus. There is a wonderful wine list and more than two dozen whiskies for those who prefer anything other than beer.

As a result, patrons can choose from a staggering array of brews. The entrance of the bar is dog-friendly at the bartender’s discretion.

A Orange Square

The Square Orange, or “the squorange” as the locals call it, is a fun and laid-back cafe that’s perfect for chilling at any time of day. You can “pup” in for coffee and cake in the morning, or spend a wet evening playing board games and sipping a drink.

Stone-baked pizzas and Spanish tapas give the menu and atmosphere a continental character. Dog owners have made this cafe/bar a regular hangout in Keswick.
