Cottingham is located in the East Riding of Yorkshire, 3.5 miles from Hull’s downtown. This surprisingly populous community has two Victorian-era main drags and a huge population for a small town. It’s actually a contender for “largest village in England,” a title claimed by other settlements. An Anglo-Saxon tribal leader by the name of “Cotta” gave his name to this magnificent region that is also steeped in history.
These thirteen dog walks in Cottingham and the surrounding region are perfect if you’ve previously explored all of our top dog walks in Yorkshire and are looking for something a little further off the beaten path. Since Cottingham is less than a half-hour drive from Hull, and several of these treks are pretty near to the city itself, they are ideal for anyone who lives in Hull.
Cottingham Circular Walks in the Countryside & Parks
This looping path is a lengthier excursion that passes through the centre of Cottingham and on to the outskirting fields. You can choose to begin your walk at any point along the route, even though the map begins at Skidby Mill. Once you leave the settlement, your dog will be able to run and play freely without having to worry about dragging you down. The people in your group can have a stroll in the countryside while you go out to dinner or visit a pub in Cottingham, Skidby, or Willerby. You can cut the walk in half to two miles if you don’t feel like walking nine.
Along the way, you’ll pass by Haltemprice Farm, where the stones are even older than the structure itself (which dates back several centuries). After the monasteries were closed down, the local priory’s assets were confiscated and utilised to construct the farm. Following or preceding your stroll down these peaceful country lanes and farmer’s fields, you can stop and take in the sights at Skidby mill.

Greater Cottingham
This walk follows a well-trodden path through the village and past the farms to the north. This peaceful path, along which you’ll see no less than three farms, is perfect for a relaxing stroll through the countryside with your dog. You and Fido will proceed north across the fields from Cottingham, through several University of Hull residence buildings, and into the outskirts of Beverley at Model Farm. This implies that you can take a break midway through your walk at Beverley. The conveniences of Cottingham, who can also be enjoyed before or after a stroll.
This path is dog-friendly because it does not need ascending or descending any stairs or stiles and your pet will enjoy spending time running and playing in the fields. The Cross Keys on Northgate is a great place to stop for a drink with the whole family, even Fido. This route is the most convenient rest stop because it serves as both the starting and ending point of the walk. However, other local pubs like the King William IV are conveniently located just a short distance away.

Circular Raywell House
This revolving walk is fun for people of all ages and fitness levels. If you’re bringing kids, be prepared with plenty of snacks and energy for the several kilometres of hiking through the countryside. Enjoy the peaceful countryside on this stroll with your dog, and consider a diversion to Nut Wood, another of our favourite dog-friendly spots in Cottingham.
To get to the fields, just drive into the layby next to the house and follow the track up. After taking in the sight of the stately home and taking a few moments to admire it, you can continue on your way to Wauldby Dam. If you’re not careful, or if you let your dog off the leash, he or she may take a fast swim in this small lake.
The path continues into the dale after passing the dam, where the eerie yet lovely Georgian tomb stands among the trees. After a skull was stolen from (and later returned to) the Raikes mausoleum, it was shut off forever. You can get back to the beginning by following the path Eastward from here. If you’re thirsty after your walk, you may have some refreshments at The Star Inn, which is located in Cottingham.

For the duration of this brief excursion from the recreation centre, the dog must be restrained because it will be passing through a residential area. However, you will need to travel a considerable distance to get to Woodmansey by way of the snicket and the nearby fields and countryside.
There are a few stiles along this path, so keep that in mind. If your dog is too large to fit through one of them, you might need to carry them. It’s a wonderful alternative to your typical dog walking routes that you might keep in mind if you live in the area. Furthermore, despite its short moniker, this stroll is 3.5 miles long, exhausting even the most energetic canine and human breeds.
The Potting Shed and the Green Dragon are two options in Beverley for post-walk refreshments, and both places accept pets. Both locations welcome dogs and serve wonderful food in pleasant settings. Another choice in the area is Vanessa Delicatessen & Cafe.

The Beavers of Beverley Trail
There are several ways to complete this circuit, however the longer loop is the one we advise for a walk with your dog. This track will put you and your dog to the test because it was created by runners as a cross-country running path. If you’re feeling up to it, you might even try running it as a group.
Starting at a recreation centre, you and your dog will set out on a ten-mile convoluted walk through rural areas. One of our favourite dog walks in Cottingham is a stretch that circles the perimeter of Beverley Westwood Common. From there, you may take a detour into the woods if you’d like. On your stroll back to Beverley, you’ll have a beautiful view of Beverley Minster.
Feel free to let your dog off the leash so they can stretch their legs and take a look around since this is a lengthy walk through fields and along the margins of woodlands. Wait to let the dog out when you are in a safe spot because there will be road crossings and a railway crossing along the walk. There are stiles and gates on this trip, and the ground can be rocky, so you should wear sturdy shoes. You might stop at any one of the many local establishments for some refreshments after your stroll. Other names include The Woolpack and The Potting Shed.

Millbeck Wildlife Area Wooded Hiking
Millbeck Wildlife Area’s various pathways, through woods and meadows, give the impression of a much larger park than it actually is. Here in the meadows, where the forest and hedges suddenly give way, is the perfect time to let your dog off the leash for some exercise or a game of fetch (if you haven’t already).
If it has recently rained, the forested sections and the boundary of the meadows will likely be flooded, therefore bring appropriate footwear. In fact, it is possible for there to be brief “floods” during which the puddles take on the appearance of miniature marshes and are therefore paw-fect for splashing around in. On a hot day, your dog can cool off by splashing around in the shallow stream.
When the leaves are out in the summer, the tree canopy nearly completely shuts around the trails, bathing you in green light and giving these peaceful paths a rare ethereal quality. Trails are not surfaced, thus wheelchairs and strollers cannot be used. The ground is normally hard and even.
Millbeck is tranquil and devoid of walkers, despite its proximity to the village. Wildlife is definitely not a problem. More specifically, squirrels. If your dog has a strong instinct to hunt, exercise caution. The Cross Keys is the closest establishment to you where you can use the loo and get a drink.

The Dene Forest
Cottingham dog lovers and their furry friends can enjoy a relaxing stroll through the trees of this tiny wooded area. This little wood is a great place to spend an hour or two getting away from it all and reconnecting with nature, plus it’s conveniently accessible for locals to take advantage of.
Bluebells, crocuses, and daffodils bloom in the spring, but there are other seasonal flowers to enjoy as well. This is a great place to see ducks and ducklings paddling around in the ponds, as they arrive shortly after the flowers do. Keep in mind that when you take your dog for a walk here, he or she may opt to take a dip. The small wood is surrounded by roads, so if your dog has a high prey drive or poor recall, you may want to keep them on a leash.
Otherwise, this forest is in pristine condition, making it ideal for a peaceful stroll with the dog or the whole family. Trails are in good shape, and the heavy overstory makes it seem like the forest is much broader and denser than it actually is. Several bars, including the dog-friendly King William IV, are within easy walking distance from the hotel.

Wauldby Scrogs and nut wood
This path begins at the same spot as the Raywell House walk but travels through the more forested areas of Nut Wood and Wauldby Scrogs. Due to the spectacular springtime blooms of bluebells, the locals have given this forest its name.
Your dog will have plenty of area to run about and play while you walk through the beautiful forest because the trees are spread out so beautifully. It’s also very isolated and peaceful. Your dog may not be a fan of the quiet, but they will love following their nose as they run free through the woods. Be warned that there are many squirrels in the area if your dog enjoys pursuing small furry animals. They frequently wander the woods in search of the hazelnuts that give the area its name.
This is a primitive forest stroll without any modern conveniences. The Star Inn and the King William IV are only two of the many pubs in Cottingham and Willerby, which are a short drive away.

Bea Westwood
There are several beautiful walks on this list, but the one that begins in Beverley is our favourites. On the common, there is plenty of room for the dog to go about off leash. Meanwhile, us humans will appreciate the stunning vistas of Beverley minster. You’ll find the Westwood to be a quintessential English woods, complete with thick foliage, shady paths, and fields of wildflowers. Spend as much time as you like wandering the many trails and open fields here. You can also take this path that skirts the forest’s edge.
The paths are smooth and simple to navigate, and there are benches dotted throughout for resting your weary paws and taking in the scenery. You’ll eventually come out into the common again, and from there you may return to town via the rolling meadows. Keep your dog on a leash if you come across any livestock on the common, since cattle will be grazing in some places. When you go back to Beverley, take your pooch to Vanessa Delicatessen & Cafe. The Starbucks near the minster is one of the few that welcomes dogs both indoors and out. Alternatively, you might visit any of the bars we’ve already recommended.

Park near the Humber Bridge
Located just 15 minutes south of Cottingham, the beautiful Humber Bridge Country Park is a favourite among local dog owners. It’s a beautiful park with miles of pathways winding through the woods and open fields. Dog walkers predominate during the week, but on Sundays, runners gather for a weekly event. Due to the park’s leash-free policy, your dog can run about and sniff around the many ecosystems for hours. Maybe some more cute animals may become buddies with them. In reality, you won’t run into many people in this park other fellow dog walkers and the occasional jogger.
You and your dog can spend the day exploring the area on one or more of four pathways, including a sculpture trail. You can take a load off at one of the many nearby benches or picnic tables, or use one of the other amenities, such as the onsite restaurant or bar. Stop by for a break and a drink at one of their tables with a view of the estuary. The park also provides access to the estuary foreshore, should you wish to explore it.

Art Trail business district in Bridgehead.
Bridgehead’s local community has built an art trail through the woods that encircles the business park, making it an unlikely destination for a leisurely stroll with the pooch. Despite its growing popularity, the neighbourhood has the air of a secretive, undiscovered paradise. The artwork, much of which was made by local youngsters, gives this very short path through the trees a lot of visual interest and jolts of colour. You can take the dog on a stroll through the woods while you try to identify the various sculptures hidden throughout the area.
People who work in the business park can take a break from the monotony of the workplace and enjoy a pleasant stroll through the woods during their lunch break. Families enjoy coming here because they can let the dogs run about and the kids can play in the grass, look for sculptures, or even make their own dens while keeping an eye on the local fauna.
This walk is conveniently located near Humber Bridge Country Park, where you may continue your paw-some walking excursion or enjoy a bite to eat at the park’s cafe. There is also a Brewers Fayre close by, but unfortunately dogs are not permitted inside. (Before setting out, always give a ring!)

Waterfront strolls
Fluvial Hull
You and Fido may take a relaxing stroll along the Hull River in Beverley, which is located to the north. The journey to Ticketon, a few kilometres to the north, will involve a long stroll alongside the water on flat footpaths with your dog. The Beck is a tranquil canal that you’ll follow until it empties into the river, past the beautifully restored locks and pumphouse, where the walk concludes. You may take your dog on a pleasant stroll down the Beck for a mile or two, enjoying the peaceful waterway and the picturesque woods on either side. Once you’ve reached the Hull River, you can just follow its winding path all the way to Tickton. There are trails on both sides of the river, so once you reach the hamlet you can simply prolong your trip by taking a leisurely stroll along its banks. If not, you may just turn around and head back to Beverley.
If you can’t drive, don’t worry; you can take the train from the Beverley station. You can also take advantage of other facilities in the area. There are several pubs in the area, including the Woolpack, Green Dragon, and Potting Shed, all of which welcome canine patrons.

Foreshore in Hessle
Again, this is a bit outside of Cottingham, but with such a stunning site less than half an hour’s drive away, we couldn’t leave a stroll along the Humber off our list of greatest dog walks in Cottingham. If you and Fido are looking to make a day of it, the Humber Bridge Country Park is a great place to start. From there, you can visit the waterfront and continue on this stroll. Given the scarcity of parking and amenities along this route, we recommend setting off from the park.
You may take a number of walks along the estuary, but this one follows the water’s edge right into Hull. If you have the time and energy, you can take the train back to Hessle from town, or you can walk back the way you came.
Even if you just want to watch the powerful water flow by, there is plenty to see on this trek. The mudflats provide a great vantage point for seeing migrating birds and passing ships. The beautiful Humber Bridge, which we consider to be the British Golden Gate Bridge, dominates the landscape. There is also a shorter, 1-kilometer circle that will provide you and Fido great views of the estuary without taking too much time out of your day.
