WHY DO DOGS PANT?

Nothing our dogs do is more dog-like than panting, despite all the strange and unusual things they do.

The tongue-lolling expression and rapid breathing are instantly recognisable, but do you know why dogs do it?

Your puppy’s panting may have several causes and numerous interpretations. The question therefore becomes, why do canines perspire?

WHY DO DOGS PANT?

Basically, all dogs occasionally engage in a behaviour characterised by rapid, shallow breathing. Dogs will naturally pant after vigorous exercise, play, or when the temperature rises.

There are two primary causes of canine panting:

as a means of cooling off
In order to get more oxygen into their blood

WHY DO DOGS PANT WHEN IT’S HOT?

Even if they aren’t active, you may have seen your dog wearing trousers more frequently this summer. A dog’s primary means of controlling its body temperature is through its panting. That is to say, when they get too hot, they start to pant.

Your dog will keep cooler if you allow them to pant, as their saliva evaporates when they do so, carrying away some of the heat from their bodies.

When they pant, they lose moisture from their upper respiratory system and cool off from the inside out. To further cool down, they might rapidly exhale heated air and inhale colder air.

In spite of the fact that your dog will feel cooler as a result of all this perspiration, it is still important to provide him with plenty of water to drink on hot days to prevent him from being dehydrated.

WHY DO DOGS PANT WITH THEIR TONGUE OUT?

When your dog pants, their tongue may dangle. They can cool off more quickly by increasing the rate at which their saliva evaporates when they pant with their tongues out, which is why dogs do this.

Your dog can cool down in a different way than simply panting: by drawing blood to the surface of its skin, or its tongue, where it can be dissipated.

Their long, flat tongue provides a lot of extra surface area for evaporative cooling of the blood. (This also means that more saliva can pool on the tongue and be lost by evaporation.) The increased blood flow might cause the tongue to enlarge if your dog is overheated.

WHY DO DOGS PANT AFTER EXERCISE?

One of the primary benefits of panting for canine athletes is the cooling effect it has after strenuous exercise. After some exercise, your dog will be much hotter than before, and he or she will need to pant to cool down.

Second, your dog pant after physical activity to aid replenish their oxygen stores. When they’re on the move, they burn through a lot of oxygen to generate energy, so panting helps them refuel by exhaling carbon dioxide and inhaling fresh air quickly. The similar thing happens when people stop breathing while jogging.

If your dog is breathing heavily, stop for a moment to let him or her recover. They can cool down and avoid overheating by taking a break every so often. You can resume your walkabouts after their breathing has returned to normal.

DO DOGS PANT WHEN THEY’RE IN PAIN?

It’s conceivable that your dog is hurt if you notice that it’s panting when it’s not hot and they haven’t been active. If your dog is panting excessively, it may be a sign that he is in discomfort or has an underlying medical problem.

Examine your dog for additional signs and consult your vet if you notice that he or she is panting for no apparent reason.

WHY DO DOGS PANT IN THE CAR?

There are two main causes of canine car-sickness: overheating and nervousness.

The interior of a car is often significantly warmer than its outside because of its lack of ventilation. Although you may not feel warm, keep in mind that humans are far more adept at controlling their body temperature than canines are.

You also know that the air conditioning in the front of the car is more comfortable than the back because you’re not wearing a fur coat, and your dog is, too. To help your dog feel more comfortable, you may open the windows a bit or put on the air conditioning. You should probably find a safe place to stop and get them a drink of water, too.

If not, then your dog is either nervous or overexcited. It’s possible that your dog’s panting is an indication that he’s feeling uncomfortable, stressed, or thrilled from riding in the car. In addition, they may link car rides with unpleasant places like the vet, thus they may be anxiously anticipating your final destination.

PANTING AND YOUR POOCH’S EMOTIONS

DO DOGS PANT WHEN THEY’RE ANXIOUS?

Anxiety-related panting in dogs is considered a behavioural kind of panting because it isn’t triggered by physical exertion or body temperature. As part of their natural “fight or flight” reaction, stressed dogs will begin excessively panting. To get their blood oxygenated and ready to sprint, they pant. Panting is another sign of anxiety or excitement in dogs.

DOES PANTING MEAN MY DOG IS HAPPY?

Sometimes a dog’s panting indicates anxiety, but it might also mean he or she is feeling particularly pleased or energised. It’s also commonly held that dogs are capable of laughing, which is described as a combination of panting and a “huh-hah” sound.

But a dog’s loud panting isn’t necessarily a sign of contentment. It’s vital to read your dog’s body language to determine the cause of any unusual behaviour, including loud, harsh panting, which may be a sign of disease. It’s a red flag if your dog seems tight or restless and is breathing heavily.

It’s crucial to be able to read your dog’s body language and determine how they’re feeling in any given circumstance; this includes knowing what causes them to pant. If you take them out for a stroll, for instance, they are probably over the moon. They may feel uneasy if a storm is brewing outside.

WHAT DOGS PANT THE MOST?

To compensate for their structural abnormalities, brachycephalic breeds like Pugs and French Bulldogs are more likely to excessively pant and experience respiratory difficulties. Due to their compressed cheeks, pugs are less effective at cooling off through panting than dogs with longer noses.

Because of their narrower airways, dogs of the brachycephalic breed are more likely to pant excessively even when they aren’t overheated or exerting themselves.

Because their diaphragm and other muscles are weaker as they age, older dogs typically pant more than younger dogs when exercising. Fibrous tissue accumulation in the lungs of senior dogs can reduce the amount of oxygen reaching the bloodstream. Illnesses like heatstroke and heart problems, which can lead to excessive panting, are more common in senior animals.

WHY DOES MY DOG PANT SO MUCH?

In most cases, a dog’s breathing returns to normal after a brief bout of panting. However, prolonged panting in a dog indicates overheating or disease if it continues for more than 10 minutes.

Ailment might manifest itself through abnormal breathing patterns. Some examples are:

Abnormally heavy breathing
The cause of their breathlessness is unclear.
Incessantly gasping for air
creaking and groaning as they breathe
exerting oneself to the point of panting

WHAT TO DO IF YOUR DOG IS PANTING HEAVILY

Heavy panting is an indication that your dog is overheated and requires you to check for heatstroke symptoms and calm them down.

One effective method is to dampen a towel and put it over your dog. You need to additionally provide them with something to drink. Avoid giving your dog ice water or cold water at any time; doing so can cause them to go into shock, which will only make them hotter. Heatstroke is a medical emergency that puts your dog’s life in jeopardy, therefore you must get in touch with your vet immediately if you think your dog may be experiencing it.

Your dog’s panting may indicate respiratory difficulties or issues such as a paralysed larynx or a collapsed trachea if it occurs more frequently or is louder than usual. If you want to take your dog to the vet for an inspection, you should film him or her panting and save the audio for later.

MY DOG WON’T STOP PANTING

Your dog may be sick if they are panting excessively. If your dog is panting excessively, it may be because of a problem with their lungs or heart that prevents them from getting enough oxygen.

They may also be suffering from anaemia, which hinders the delivery of oxygen to all parts of the body. You may help keep your dog from developing anaemia by feeding him high-quality dog food that contains iron and folate. When a dog is overweight, they often have to pant more to cool off. Persistent panting can also be a symptom of a hormonal condition such as Cushing’s disease.

Poisoning symptoms can also include irregular or rapid breathing. You should take your dog to the vet if you notice that it is breathing rapidly or if it exhibits any other signs of illness.

Get Fido checked out by the vet so they can figure out what’s making him or her pant so much and help.
