Five of Yorkshire’s Best Watering Holes for Fido!

In the midst of lockdown back in May, the Benchmark Kennels crew reached out to you, the community, asking for recommendations for dog-friendly watering holes in Yorkshire. It was a great chance for dog people to celebrate their favourite canine-friendly watering holes and spread the word about these warm and inviting watering holes.

First of all, I appreciate it. More than 300 readers voted and shared the reasons why their communities are meaningful to them and their pets. We were thrilled to read your responses.

Now that many bars have reopened after Boris’s decision to relax lockout regulations on July 4, it’s the ideal opportunity to reveal the victors and celebrate the county of Yorkshire’s top five most popular watering holes.

Cue the horns…

1. The Crown & Cushion, Welburn

For the best possible experience, you must visit The Crown & Cushion in Welburn, North Yorkshire. They won the most votes from dog owners and residents because of their beautiful location and welcoming policy towards canines dining with their family.

The building itself dates back to the 18th century, making it a beautiful setting for either a casual drink after a stroll or a formal dinner.

The rear patio is perfect for drinks in the summer weather, and the open fireplaces make the pub a warm and inviting spot to spend a Sunday in the winter.

The settlement of Welburn may be found in Rydale, not far from Malton and York. Several of the famous treks and bird-watching areas in the region may be reached either by starting or ending at the Crown & Cushion, which is conveniently located near the A64.

2. The Wheatsheaf Inn, Carperby

The Wheatsheaf Inn in Wensleydale comes up next; it’s situated in the stunning Yorkshire Dales National Park and is a favourite of hikers and explorers alike. After a day of exploring the nearby dales with your furry companions or perusing the charming village stores, you’ll be ready for a pint at one of the area’s many pubs, which are plentiful thanks to the region’s many tourist attractions.

Several of their single, double, and family rooms are totally pet-friendly and offer a home-away-from-home atmosphere, making them ideal if you’re planning a long walk with the dog and need a somewhere to lay your head afterward.

3. The Fountain Hotel, Hawes

Third place goes to the Fountain Hotel, also in Hawes, North Yorkshire. Dogs and kids are welcome at this hotel and bar, which takes pleasure in serving hearty, homemade pub food.

The bar is packed on game days since it has three screens playing live sports, perfect for viewing the return of premier football post-corona.

Locals and tourists alike frequent the bar after a day of seeing the picturesque town of Wensleydale and the Yorkshire Dales, and vice versa.

4. The Oak Tree, Helperby

The Oak Tree in neighbouring Helperby comes in at number four. The hamlet is full of charm, and nearby trails include the banks of the Ule and Swale, as well as the abandoned rail bed. You may stay the night with your pet, or just stop in for a drink after a long walk and peruse the extensive drink menu, which includes many options from which to chose from local brews, hand-pulled ales, and fine wines.

Dogs are welcome in the private party rooms that may be rented by people seeking to celebrate important occasions alongside their human family members and friends.

5. Rose & Crown, Sutton-on-the-Forest

The Rose & Crown comes in last, but it certainly isn’t last. There is just one bar left in the North Yorkshire village of Sutton-on-the-Forest, and it serves as the social hub of the town thanks to its welcoming atmosphere and delicious Sunday meal.

Dogs and families are welcome on curry evenings, steak nights, and fresh fish Fridays at this popular pub, which is known for serving some of the greatest food in York. Located only eight miles from York’s historic core, this pub and restaurant is perfect for anyone wishing to relax with a reasonably priced drink and meal after a day of sightseeing.

It was difficult to narrow it down to just ten, so if your favourite isn’t here, don’t feel bad. Many other establishments, such as York’s Trafalgar Bay and East Witton’s Coverbridge Inn, were close contenders and would be lovely choices for a relaxing drink with your dog or family.

Let us know whether your favourite dog-friendly bar made the top five, and whether you intend to return to the bars following the lockdown, or if you’d rather drink in the comfort of your own home for the time being.
