The Whippet Inn
15 North St, York YO1 6JD
The Whippet Inn serves excellent steaks and seafood. Tucked away on North Street, it’s a bit of a hidden gem, but once you’ve been there, you won’t want to leave. Wonderful, helpful people tend to your every need in a setting that’s both trendy and fun. All the dishes are delicious, unique, and freshly prepared.
Dishes like “Picanha—32 Day Dry Aged, Triple Cooked Chunky Chips, Garlic & Thyme Confit Vine Tomato, Green Peppercorn & Brandy Sauce” and “Poached Sea Trout Fillet with Olive Oil Potato, Puffed Fish Skin, Aromatic Herb Powder, Brown Shrimp Butter & Pea Purée” can be found on the menu.
The Whippet Inn is “the perfect place for any occasion,” as their website puts it: “We serve lunch and dinner, seven days a week, and in addition to our Main Menu and specials boards, we offer our legendary(ish) Set Price lunch menu Monday through Friday, as well as ‘Lets Get Roasted’ every Sunday, which is a tradition unto itself and one of York’s best kept secrets (so sshhh).”

The Old Bank – Dog friendly pub in York
6-12 Lendal, York YO1 8AA
Across from the Judges’ Lodgings on Lendal is the Old Bank. The hotel has recently reopened following an extensive renovation, and the furnishings are contemporary and inviting. You can recharge over lunch, and bring the kids because each booth has its own TV, power outlet, and USB charger. This is an excellent cheap choice.
The Stone Trough Inn
Kirkham Abbey, York YO60 7JS
On the A64 between York and Malton, you’ll find the Stone Trough Inn in the little town of Kirkham Abbey. You can find this spacious, cosy, traditional tavern in the middle of some stunning rural scenery. There’s a huge beer garden out back with beautiful scenery. That Sunday supper is really special!
Set on a hill with sweeping views of Kirkham Abbey, this hotel is located in a breathtakingly beautiful part of England. Open fireplaces and exposed stone walls are two of the many historic features of our magnificent bar. We’re known for our delicious home-cooked meals made using ingredients from local farms and our extensive selection of fine beers and ales brewed in Yorkshire. We love kids and dogs.
The Stone Trough Inn has a delicious Sunday lunch, which we reviewed.
The Star Inn The City
It’s the Star Inn. Museum Gardens and the Riverfront are a stunning backdrop for the City. “It’s more of a restaurant than a bar, although dogs are allowed. In 2013, the building’s proprietors, led by Andrew Pern of the Michelin-starred Star Inn at Harome, created a brasserie-style restaurant in one of York’s most picturesque settings.
The restaurant has become a go-to for milestone events like graduation, birthdays, and anniversaries because to its stunning location, excellent food, and genuine Yorkshire friendliness. This is the Star Inn. Whitby’s The Star Inn The Harbour, a sibling establishment to The City, boasts the greatest harbor-side position in town and serves up Moorish-inspired dishes in addition to fresh seafood from the Yorkshire coast.
The Judge’s Lodging
9 Lendal, York YO1 8AQ
