This beautiful pub is not only the oldest continuously licenced establishment in York, but it is also rife with myth and tradition. It is tucked away in an alley off the main strip because it has been around longer than any of the shops on the block.

Not only is Ye Olde Starre Inne York’s oldest pub, but it’s also one of the few places that allows both kids and dogs. Real ales and human food are offered, while dogs have access to water bowls and treats.

The Anagram Keys

This beautiful structure, which goes back to the Victorian era, houses a genuine bar. There are water dishes and snacks for canine customers at The Cross Keys, making it a dog-friendly establishment.

There are many historical curios on exhibit, such as a mediaeval slipper discovered inside a wall that was used to ward off evil spirits, and parts of the structure that date back to the 15th or 16th century.

The Bay Equine

The Horse with Only Two Legs

A massive renovation was completed on the Three-Legged Mare (also known as the “wonky donkey”) in 2016, and it reopened for business the following year. Traditional gallows inspired the name (cheery…), and a miniature “three-legged mare” may be found in the backyard garden.

This bar offers a cosy, old-fashioned atmosphere, perfect for a quiet night out. Water bowls are accessible for canine customers at all times. In order to preserve the classic pub atmosphere, this establishment does not let anybody under the age of 18. This includes the use of jukeboxes, fruit machines, and minors.

Although it is a bit of a journey from York proper, the Rose and Crown is well worth the trip at the end of the day. It’s well worth it, as it was ranked as Yorkshire’s fifth-best dog-friendly watering hole.

After a day of exploring York or taking in the scenery on one of the many nearby village walks, this cosy tavern in the heart of Sutton-on-the-Forest is just what the doctor ordered.
