Valhalla is the place to go in York if you’re in the mood for something new or if you’re interested in the city’s Viking heritage. Mead, in addition to the standard beer and wine selection, is available at this cafe/bar. The Golden Slipper is a historic tavern that has the atmosphere of a cosy hamlet watering hole. After closing time, dogs are welcome inside the bar. (As of whatever time of day it is, service ends at 3 or 6 p.m.)
There are many historical curios on exhibit, such as a mediaeval slipper discovered inside a wall that was used to ward off evil spirits, and parts of the structure that date back to the 15th or 16th century.

After lengthy renovations, The Bay Horse has emerged as a great gastropub and B&B, standing out from the pack of chain-run watering holes. All of the dishes are made from scratch using local ingredients and go great with an ale beside one of the stunning Tudor fires.

Harkers, with its beautiful Georgian exterior, is the focal point of St. Helen’s Square. The bar now stands where, in 300 AD, the Roman gate to York welcomed visitors.

Escape the city’s bustle while still taking in its rich history by visiting The Ackhorne, located at the end of a narrow, cobblestone alley. (Meaning “acorn”) This great watering hole has become known as one of York’s best canine-friendly watering holes with the addition of resident bulldog Buddy earlier this year.

A massive renovation was completed on the Three-Legged Mare (also known as the “wonky donkey”) in 2016, and it reopened for business the following year. Traditional gallows inspired the name (cheery…), and a miniature “three-legged mare” may be found in the backyard garden.
This bar offers a cosy, old-fashioned atmosphere, perfect for a quiet night out. Water bowls are accessible for canine customers at all times. In order to preserve the classic pub atmosphere, this establishment does not let anybody under the age of 18. This includes the use of jukeboxes, fruit machines, and minors.

Although it is a bit of a journey from York proper, the Rose and Crown is well worth the trip at the end of the day. It’s well worth it, as it was ranked as Yorkshire’s fifth-best dog-friendly watering hole.
