THE GOLDEN LION

Located at the base of Downdinner Hill, this cosy bar is right in the heart of Whitby. Arriving at The Golden Lion is like taking a time machine back to the 1920s. That’s great news if you’re planning to relax by the fireplace with your dog, a cold beer, and a big plate of food.

This is a grade 1 listed building, so it makes sense that it feels ageless and is a favourite of the locals. In case you happen to drop by, you should definitely have a look at the penny tables in the lounge. Although it is one of Whitby’s smaller dog-friendly pubs, it makes up for its size in personality and charm.

A casual observer may mistake this building for a modest residence if not for the bright red signs. Given the confines, it is hardly surprising that there is no cooking facilities. But the landlords allow takeout, and the chippie is just around the corner.
